Thailand - Phetchaburi (Phetburi)

@Photo Gallery of Phetchaburi (Phetburi) in Thailand.

Phra Nakhon Khiri Palace
The beautiful white palace on the hill: Phra Nakhon Khiri Palace.
Phetchaburi or Phetburi is in central Thailand, about 160km south of Bangkok and 50 km north of HuaHin, located at the northern end of the Malay Peninsula.
"Phetchaburi" means "city of diamonds" in Thai.

Phetchaburi is an old royal city, dating back to the 8th century.
With its location of the top of the Malay Peninsula and the border between  Myanmar (Burma) and Thailand, Phetchaburi has been an important area since a long time ago.

@The three kings of the Rattanakosin Period, Rama IV, V, and VI, established their palaces here, and Petchaburi is also known as Muang Sam Wang - the city of the three palaces.
  • Rama IV: Phra Nakhon Khiri Palace
  • Rama V : Phra Ram Ratchaniwet Palace
  • Rama VI: Maruekhathaiyawan Palace (Phra Rajnivesmarugadayawan)

Including the three palaces above, there are a lot of places to visit in Petchaburi, such as Phra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park where the Phra Nakhon Khiri palace, one of the three palaces, was built on the hill (or the mountain), Wat Kampang Lang that shows the influence of Khmer, Cha-am beach that is the Thailand's longest white sand beach only two hours drive from Bangkok, Khao Luang Cave that is regarded as the largest and the most important cave of Phetchaburi with a lot of Buddha images inside.

In addition, the official city flower is the leelowadee or frangipani that you can see often in Thailand.

One of the three places in Phetchaburi (Phetburi), Phra Nakhon Khiri Palace, was built here on the hill (or mountain) whose highest peak is 95 meters high.

There are three peaks, the western, the central, and the eastern peaks, and the palace on the western peak, the chedi on the central peak, the temple on the eastern peak can be seen.

This mountain (or hill) was called "Khao Samon" (Samon Hill) long time ago. ("Khao" means "hill" or "mountain".)
After the Phra Nakhon Khiri Palace was built by Rama IV, this mountain turned to "Nakhon Khiri". However, people still call it like in the old way, "Khao Wang" (Palace Hill). ("Wang" means "palace".)

You can go up by cable car. (I don't know if there is a walk way up to the top.)

[Phetchaburi] Phra Ram Ratchaniwet Palace

Phra Ram Ratchaniwet Palace
Phra Ram Ratchaniwet Palace was built by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) as a rainy season palace.
The construction began in 1910 and finished in 1916, it took for six years.
The design was made by a German in a European style.

This palace, originally called Ban Puen Palace (Wang Ban Puen).
The name was changed to "Phraram Ratchaniwet" in 1918 when it was used to offer hospitality and accommodate royal visitors from all around the world.

Now, let's go and see around the fantastic palace.

[Phetchaburi] Maruekhathaiyawan Palace

The end of the passage from the palace to the ocean. It looks like a shower room ?
Maruekhathaiyawan Palace is a summer seaside palace, often referred to as "the palace of love and hope". It was built in 1923 under the royal command of King Rama VI using golden teakwood from the demolished "Hat Chao Samran Palace". An Italian architect was hired to design the palace.

Talking of palace and teakwood, you may come up with the "Vimanmek Mansion Palace" in Bangkok, however, this palace, Maruekhathaiyawan Palace, is a one-story building and has a total of one thousand and eighty pillars with three parts of the area: the area for the royal family in the right, for the royal retainers in the left and the area for the reading room, sitting room and drawing room around the center.

The passage to the ocean and small buildings on the beach are very impressive.

[Phetchaburi] Khao Luang Cave

Khao Luang Cave, located about 30 meters below the ground, is regarded as the most important cave of Phetchaburi province.
Khao Luang Cave, located about 30 meters below the ground, is regarded as the most important cave of Phetchaburi province because the important ornamented Buddha image built by King Rama V and dedicated to King Rama III and IV is enshrined here.

The cave has more than 150 Buddha images. You'll see huge stalactites hang down from the walls of the cave. The fantastic thing is, the cave has large holes in the ceiling that allow natural light to stream in, illuminating the cave during the daytime.

This cave had been a royal meditation and picnic site since the King Rama IV period (in mid-19th century).
This place has a lot of monkeys.
The crocodile on the roof is to scare the monkeys away. Looks no effect. :D
This is when going back but you'll walk the way to the cave.
