[Thai Language] Daily Life 1 (Basics)

Let's see the basic phrases of daily life in Thai language.

Really wonderful if you can say in Thai like "give me water", "let me see", "please write here", "Mai I ?",  "Can I ?",  "No", "May I take a picture ?", "I want to go to the restroom", or "Which one is delicious ?"

This is ... .

 Some English text books have the expression, " This is ..." such as "This is a pen" at the beginning of the lesson. Actually, there are not so many occasion to use "This is ..." in daily life, however, try this expression in Thai language.

This is my passport. Niikue Nang-sue-dern-thaang Khong Pom/Dichan Krab/Ka
นี่คือ หนังสือเดินทาง ของ ผม/ดิฉัน ครับ/ค่ะ
  • Niikue: This is ...
  • Nang-sue-dern-thaang: passport ("Passport" can be used as well.)
  • khong: of someone
  • Pom: I (male)
  • Dichan: I (female)

This expression "Niikue ... " is also used when you introduce your family or friends to someone.

Give me ...

" Khor ... Noi " is used in Thai language.

Please give me water. Khor Naam Noi Krab/Ka
ขอ น้ำ หน่อย ครับ/ค่ะ
  • Khor: ask for; "I'd like...", "Can/May I have...?"
  • Naam: water

NOTE: "Noi"
You can be understood without "Noi" but it makes the sentence softer.

Instead of "Naam"(water), you can put anything you want.

  • coffee: gaa faae (กาแฟ )
  • receipt: baiset (ใบเสร็จ )
  • change: ngern torn (เงินทอน )
  • ticket: tuaa (ตั๋ว)
  • soap: sabuu (สบู่)
  • towel: phaa shet tua (ผ้าเช็ดตัว)

  • tissue paper: gradaat thit shuu (กระดาษทิชชู่)

" ... Dai Mai Krab/Ka " is used for "May I ...? / Can I ...? " in Thai language.

  • Dai
    It shows "possible", and when "mai" for question is added after "dai", it means "May I ? or Can I ?"

  • Okay or No
    Dai can be used for Okay / Go ahead, and putting "Mai" for negative before "Dai" means "No" or "you can not".

Instead of " dai ", "chern" (เชิญ) that means "please" is sometimes used.

Forbid, Prohibit

In Thai language, when you want to say, no ... such as no smoking, use "haam .... krab/ka".

Want to do ...

When you say you want to do something in Thai language, " Yaak ... krab/ka. " is used.
If you want to say that in a polite way in Thai language, " Tong Gaan ... krab/ka. " should be said.

Which one ... ?

To ask "Which one ... more ... ?" in Thai Language, " AnNai ... Kwaa Krab/Ka ?" can be used.
meaning Thai Language (Green:stress / Blue:male / Pink:female)
Which one is more delicious ? AnNai Aroi Kwaa Gun Krab/Ka
อันไหน อร่อย กว่า กัน ครับ/คะ
It looks like no "Gun" can be fine but if the sentence is without "Gun", it feels a little unusual. (I don't understand it, though. :D )

Instead of "Aroi (delicious)", you can put any words you want to say like below;

  • Thuuk: cheap/inexpensive ถูก
  • Pang: expensive แพง
  • Ped: spicy/hot เผ็ด
  • Suay: beautiful สวย
  • Dee: good ดี

  • AnNai: which one
  • Aroi: delicious
  • Kwaa: more
  • Gun: than

The " ... kheuu khrai" means "who is ... ?"
Instead of "Kheuu", "Pen" can be used.
