Bangkok - Gateway Ekamai

Gateway Ekamai, the huge and exotic, Japanese-themed shopping mall with a giant maneki-neko (beckoning cat) in front, is located on Sukhumvit Road in the heart of Ekamai, a junction of business and residential area where a lot of Japanese live. (Jun., Aug. in 2013)

The shopping mall has many Japanese food restaurants and it's very convenient to go because it's connected directly to Ekamai station of BTS Skytrain. Gateway Ekkamai is the perfect spot to stop in when you miss Japanese food !

This shopping mall is, I guess, for Thai locals who like Japanese food and tourists from overseas and especially for Japanese who live in Thailand for a long time and miss Japanese food, more than for tourists from Japan.

Not only various kinds of Japanese food restaurants, the shopping mall offers so many shops such as health and beauty, fashion and accessary stores, IT area, game and education place, pet shop, and supermarket. The amusement and education area on the 5th floor is a very good communication space for Japanese parents and their children.

When I tried to visit this shopping mall first, I went to Terminal 21 by mistake, that was 3 stations away from here. Wow, finally, I came here. Now, let's walk and check around together. :D

  • *1 ) About GEISHA (an explanation beside a Japanese doll, KOKESHI)
    • Geisha is a term used to call Japanese ladies who are knowledgeable in various aspects of arts and can apply their skills in entertaining and welcoming guests. Originally, only men could become Geisha because this occupation derived from royal jesters within the palace, before eventually being transferred to ladies.
    • Geishas must be trained in multiple fields of arts since their childhood such as music, singing, dancing, tea making, flower arrangement, poems and literature. They must also learn about more sophisticated branches of arts such as kimono dressing and maintaining an entertaining conversation with guests.
