Thailand - Chiang Saen (Golden Triangle)

A gate for taking a ceremonial photo against the Triangle.
Photo Gallery of Chiang Saen in Thailand.

Chiang Saen, one of the districts of Chiang Rai, is located on the bank of the Mekong River, about 60 km to the north from Chiang Rai in Thailand. It's an ancient capital and originally called " Wiang Hiran Nakhon Ngoen Yang ".
This city was the capital of the Lanna Thai Kingdom and a forerunner of it, Chiang Saen Kingdom, and until now, the city has old walls to protect itself and ruins.

It's very famous for the gate of the Golden Triangle where the borders of the three countries (Laos, Myanmar (Burma) and Thailand) are on the Mekong River.
Roads and Tourist facilities have been increasingly developed recently.

About Chiang Rai, see the " Photo Gallery of Chiang Rai".

[Chiang Saen] Golden Triangle

The Golden Triangle, where the borders of the three countries cross on the Mekong River; Thailand, Laos and Myanmar.
It's located around 60km to the north from Chiang Rai.

I came here once about 7 years ago and compared to the one those days, this place has been very developed. (As of 2006)

(The image of this place last time was a simple and warm northern tourist place but these days, it has turned to be new in total.)

Three countries across the river
(The boarders of Laos, Burma(Myanmar), Thailand are across the river.
The picture above is two pictures together and not so beautiful but I feels something mysterious. This might be because I'm from an island country, Japan.)
Ceremonial photograph
(Take a ceremonial photo against the Triangle.
Last time I saw this was made of wood and atmospheric ...)
Big boat 1
(I guess they didn't have this here before.
A big Buddha statue is on the boat.)

[Golden Triangle] Big Tung (Flag)

" Tung " is the long things in the picture. Originally it is a " flag " and means " victory " or " a gift to Buddha ". Art of Lanna Thai era and the symbol of Chiang Rai.
From some description attached on the Tungs, the Tungs in the pictures shows " love and respect to the King ".
I didn't see this Tungs last time when I came here several years ago.

[Golden Triangle] Kids of hill tribe

In the public square in front of the big tungs (the pictures above), kids of hill tribe " Akha " are waiting for tourists to take a commemorative picture of them together, as a part time job.

When a tour bus comes, they start singing in Thai all at once toward tourists like " Let's have a photo taken with us. Only 20 Bahts if with 5 of us." This makes the atmosphere of the place very fun.

[Golden Triangle] Wat Prathart Phu Kao

This temple " Wat Phathart Phu Kao " is across the square of big tungs.
It has a very long flight of stairs.

(Looks like my wife was very tired and gave up to go up. She was waiting for me at the bottom of the stairs. :D
Dragon in front
(5 head dragons that often can be seen in Thailand.)
If you go up,..
(You'll see an unfamiliar statue in Thailand.)
Main hall
(The place here is very quiet and peaceful. :) )
If you look down,..
(A building around the bottom of the stairs. Northern style.. right ?)

[Golden Triangle] Extra

Took a break at a cafe beside the square of the Tungs.
This cafe has a gift shop inside also.
Inside 1
(They have various gifts.)
Inside 2
(Is this a lion or something ? And motorbikes.)
Inside 3
(Japanese cartoons are popular in Asian countries, and this seems same in Thailand also.
In the cafe, there were " Dragon Ball " and one of my favorite cartoons " Ushio-to-Tora " (really surprising) )
